Colour Schemes
Colour scheme 1 - This is my preferred colour scheme choice. I have used black and white because they are both very contemporary colours and will also allow me to use my chosen colour on top of them as any colour will stand out on them because they are shades and not colours. They are also harsh and will stand out, especially black as it has connotations of darkness and so do rock stars which is the music genre I have chosen. I have chosen purple again because it is a harsh colour and quite vibrant and this is usually how rock artists dress with black but with a more vibrant colour on top, especially now as they are becoming more mainstream and current. I have chosen this shade, because unlike lilac it is more unisex as more men are comfortable with having colours that were before seen as feminine however I would not go as far as using pink as it still holds very feminine connotations. Colour scheme 2 - This colour scheme also uses the colours black, white and purple. Again choosing black and white because they are contemparary and are unisex. On this colour scheme I have used a lighter purple that is lilac. Although I like this colour because it is not as harsh it does not work with the black and white. Also it is alot softer than the darker purple therefore has alot girlyer connotations as it is alot like pink. Also, because it is alot softer it does not match the connotations of the genre I am using of Rock as they are seen as quite loud and boistrous where as this colour does not match either of these connotations.
Front Cover Layout
Front cover 1 - This front cover is following the codes and conventions of magazines as it has the title in the top left hand corner of the music magazine. This is important as a title is the first thing that grabs the readers attention, especially if the music magazine has a catchy title. I have put the issue number and price underneath to inform the reader right away. I have put the main image on the left to forground it under the title and then would have the text to the right of it and wrapped round the picture. This is very simple as it has a clear difference between the image and text however it could look a bit text heavy or image heavy on each side. I have also seperated the main features and other regular contents cover lines as they both attract different groups of readers. For example the main feature, although it will also attract existing readers, it will aim to bring new readers to the magazine as they may be interested in the main feature especially if it is exclusive. On the other hand, the other regular contents are on their own as this will attract to existing readers as this is what they will want to see as they will have confidence that these contents will always be here. Although I like this layout as it is simple and clear I think the regular contents do not need to be on the front cover, as the existing audience will already know they are going to be in the magazine as they have brand loyalty therefore will have knowledge that they are going to be there. I have isolated the pug in the top right hand corner as it is important that this stands out as it will be advertising something in particular.
Front cover 2 - This front cover firstly follows the codes and conventions of a music magazine as it has the title in the top left hand corner. This works well as the magazines name must be prominant and must be at the top as sometimes in the shops magazines sit in front of one another so you must be able to see the name at the top at all times. I have also included the issue number and price underneath. The price must also be visible because it can determine whether somebody buys the magazine or not as they a price can be attractive and equally put somebody off. I have put the heading and subheading just underneath this as it is what is going to introduce the main story and I would like to do a catchy or controversial heading to get the readers attention. This is the same as the coverlines and regular contents on the opposite side. For example, the regular contents is what existing readers will look out for therefore they will have comfort in seeing these on the front cover as they know they will be included in the magazine. And other contents will help as, if the main feature does not attract the readers attention the other contents is what they will look at next so this must be equally as eye catching and interesting. I am also including a pug in the bottom left hand corner, this will be related to the main feature for example, a free download of the featuring artists music. And also a pug in the top right hand corner which will be more general to the magazine, or another feature for example a free poster or a subscribe now offer. For the main image I had ideas of using a woman with a guitar and I'd have her head flung to the left so that the main feature heading and the other articles can be wrapped around the picture, so that the image is forgrounded to attract attention but at the same time the contents is clear.
Front cover 3 - This is my favourite choice of front cover as it looks creative however is clear at the same time. I have started with keeping the title in the top left hand to continue to follow the codes and conventions of magazines. I have moved the issue number and price towards the barcode as this will allow me to foreground the title and main heading without it looking cluttered in the top corner. I have put a pug on its own in the top right hand corner and have isolated it so that it stands out and looks clear as it will be advertising something within or for the magazine. I have put the main heading and main feature together so that the reader is aware of exactly what the main content is so it'll attract them to buy the magazine. I have however missed a pug in the bottom left corner therefore am going to put one in that is featured around the main article, for example a free download of the music trap of the main featuring artist. The main image are going to be of the main artist. She will be holding an electric guitar and have her head swung to the left so that the text can be wrapped either side of the image as it will be a very distinct shape. I have put the barcode and price in the bottom right corner as this also follows the codes and conventions of a magazine.

Ideas for title

Font 1 - This font is one of my favourite font types. It has a destroyed look which has connotations of violence which is linked well to the connotations of rock music. Also it has an almost graffiti look about it as though it has been sprayed on a wall, this has connotations of a youth activity and something youths are suspected of doing. This is good as my Rock music magazine is going to be aimed at the younger generation of 15-21. So they will be attracted to this look. I have chosen to use the black font in stead of a colour as it will not clash with the picture I am going to use as the front cover image. However, I may try and include some colour as I would like to bring in my colour of the house style as soon as possible so that it becomes recognisable to the audience. I also like the shape around the font, as it is not too 'bubbly' like you would expect on a pop magazine and is sharp in the corners so can be attractive to ages between 15 and 21 that I am aiming to target as a market.
Font 2 - This title choice is developed from font choice 1. I am going to use this title choice for my magazine. I have chosen this because after recognising that I could bring the house style colour in immediately with the use of colour in the title I have done this by creating an edge on the image with a purple shadow. I have continued with my choice of purple as it works well with black and continues to bring the contemporary house style I am going for. However is still a harsh colour so compliments the destroyed font I use in this title. I also like the shape around the font as the corners are sharp, so could have connotations of being quite edgy, however has the softness as well to allow it to attract to both male and female. Also because the font is more graphical rather than just a simple, what could be classed as boring, font it will create a less formal look for the magazine which will attract a younger audience as they can be seen as lazy therefore will not like reading as much.

Font 3 - Font 3 again has a destroyed look that could link well to the Rock genre I am using as Rock artists have a reputation to be violent and destroy things as their music is loud and harsh. Instead of using the curved and pointy edged shape as above I have used one that is all pointy. I think this is quite a masculine shape as it is quite sharp and box like. As my magazine is aimed at both men and women I feel that the shape was not right for this market as it is too masculine and buyers initially see the front cover and this is where they base their first opinions therefore I must ensure that it is immediately obvious as to who the magazine is aimed by using shapes and colours that will attract them. I do not feel this has portrayed the target market correctly.

Font 4 - I have used a font that looks as though a marker has written it therefore will attract a younger audience like the rest as markers are used in school environments. It also looks as though it is not typed therefore again creates a more informal look that younger people will be attract to as it converges the audience and writer with a more casual relationship. I have used a rectangular shape around the font, as the font is rectangular aswell so this compliments it. I have used the purple shadow again around the rectangular box to bring in the house style however it looks very simple and not very artistic and younger people have more creative minds so may not be attracted to this as much as font 2.

Initial Ideas

There are may different features I must consider to create my music magazine, these features include; images, colours, contents, name of the magazine, main features and coverlines. These are all things I need to construct my magazine and by looking at a variation of different options I will be able to choose the best option to fit the genre and target audience of my magazines.
I have looked at a range of names for my music magazine, the choices of names I made were; Bass, Mute, Voice, Vibe, Unplugged and Rock!t. All of these names could work well as they have connotations of music and are related to music in someway i.e. Bass is a pitch of music and unplugged reminds me of how headphones can be unplugged to play music outloud or a guitar can be unplugged from an amp. Out of all my choices I chose Unplugged and Mute for my two favourite music magazine names. I chose Unplugged because it rolls of the tongue and also has can be related to Rock, which is the genre of my magazine, as they use electric guitars in their music and these could be unplugged from an amp. Also it has connotations of being released so the audience could relate this concept with new news being released in the magazine. I also chose Mute because I liked the irony of how music, especially rock music, has connotations of being loud and played publically, however mute reminds us of silence. Also Mute is monosylabolic therefore again rolls of the tongue well and is easy to remember.
I have looked at the connotations of many different colours, i.e the girllike connotations of the colour pink and fresh connotations of green. I looked at the colours Black, Purple, Pink, White, Red, Green and Orange and have narrowed down that Pink, Orange and Green have very softer connotations are are less harsh than the others. I do not think this fits the genre of rock my magazine has as Rock has connotations of harshness and boldness and these colours do not match this. However, Red, Black, White and Purple do as they are all rich bold colours. I looked at the connotations of Red and Purple. Red has connotations of an older audience as it is considered contempary. It is also unisex therefore wuld fit an audience of both male and female. I also looked at the connotations of purple and deciphered that it has connotations of being loud, rich and expensive this would allow me to attract the audience as it looks good quality. It also reminds people of Cadbury chocolate and although this is not relevant to music magazines it reminds an audience of good quality therefore they may have a built trust in it. Also, recently, it has become more contempary and unisex, this means I could use it for an audience of both male and female and it would attract a younger audience than the colour red, and a younger audience is what I am targetting. I will use the shades black and white as base colours for my magazine, as these also create a contempary look and are bold an simplistic.
I also need to consider how images will be used the whole way through the magazine. The first area I considered is the front cover as this is the area, I believe, that needs to be focused on the most, as it is what the reader initially see's and what could potentially allow them to decide whether or not they buy the magazine. The participants of my questionnaire chose that an image on a front cover is the most influential part of it that catches their eye to buy the magazine. There are many angles I could take my picture at for example I could use a long shot or a close up or a medium close up. I have chosen I am going to use a medium close up as I would like to use an image that attracts both men or women. I think the easiest way to attract men is to use an image that has sexual connotations therefore am going to use a woman artist. This could also help attract a female as if I use a medium shot they will be able to see a whole woman and I could use a low angle to make the artist seem like they have power and this could attract a womans attention as they will see them as a role model. This image will take up the whole of my magazines front cover as it must be prominant if it is going to attract the audience's attention and I wil wrap the text around this so it is foregrounded. I am going to use smaller close up images of artists to go on the front cover aswell as to introduce the contents clearly.
I must also consider what images I will use on the contents page. I will probably have mostly text however with the main features I will include images to attract the readers attention and allow them to build confidence that the contents will be interesting and will also keep their attention. I will use smaller images and unlike the front cover will not use any props and will have the picture solely on their faces as a close up or something else that signifies the band. Therefore the audience can relate to it straight away.
I am also going to c onsider what images I use on the double page spread. I am going to make sure I use the same artist on the front cover as I do the double page spread as it will be the main feature. So the woman is going to be a solo artist. Because I am doing a medium close up on the front cover I am going to use a different camera angle on the double page spread for example I can use a close up or a long shot.

How research will inform planning
For my research I sent out 30 questionnaires to mostly students but some teachers in my sixth form. Half of which were to males and half to females. This allowed me to get as much as a representation of the population as possible, meaning that I gathered reliable evidence to base my planning on.
The questionnaire left me with basic results that I must consider to produce my magazine. For example, the dominating age group of my participants were 17-21 year olds, from this I know that I have information that is mostly relevant to this age group. Therefore, I will choose this age group for my target market as I know that if I use the information collected will attract the ages 17-21. It will also allow me to choose the price of the magazine. Out of 30 people 12 chose £1-3 and 14 chose £3.01-4.99. From this I can choose a suitable price to put my magazine at as I can tell from my results what price the market will be willing to pay. I also deciphered from my results that the majority of readers of magazines, buy them monthly. Therefore I will make mine a monthly issue as this will also allow me to put the magazine at a higher price as it is more exclusive and less frequent.
I also asked about what genre was preffered, the most popular choice was R&B, this would suggest that there is a gap in the market for this type of magazine. However, from looking at music websites and other free media types they are all dominated by R&B music as it is classified as mainstream music. From this I have come to the conclusion that if this type of music media is so easily accessed for free then people, espeicially that of the target market of teenagers I have chosen, will not be willing to pay for music media. Therefore, I am going to use rock as the genre of music my magazine is based on. Although this is one of the least popular choices I believe it has the biggest market as it is not as available for free and people that are interested in that music are a very niche group however are dedicated to their music and are willing to pay extra for exclusive and extra information on current artists.
My questionnaire also asked, what music magazines people read. If any read music magazines it was NME, RockSound and Q. Q's contents is largely dominated by well known artists rather than genre specfic artists. So this could be something to consider when choosing who is my main feature of the magazine. However NME and RockSound were also both magazines people read. This suggests that people also read genre specific magazines. However, the majority of people who answered 'Why do you not read music magazines' answered Magazines not specific to mainstream generes. This ties in with the amount of people that read Q. I may use this result alot when creating my magazine, as the lack of mainstream magazines seem to be an issue when people are choosing a music magazine. This foregrounds a gap in the market for a magazine that talks about current artists as it seems to be a trend as one of my real media artefacts was a Rock magazine however even that front cover was dominated by large rock artists that are no longer genre specific because of their media attention.
77% of my participants of my questionnaire andswered that 'Yes' a music magazine's front cover does influence them to buy it. This will mean that I must pick all features of a front cover that are eye catching and attract to a reader. The majority also answered that pictures/artist on cover are the dominating factors of why they would be attracted to a front cover. I believe this could be dominated by the males who answered the question as they are likely to pick up a magazine that has sex appeal as that is what attracts them to things, especially of the age range 17-21 that I am considering. This would mean that I would probably use an image of a women on my front cover, this can also be made unisex as many girls/young women in my age range will also be attracted to a woman on the front cover as they are seen as role models, and enjoy being enlightened into their lives, so I would use this when relating my double page spread to my front cover.
Many people that took part in my questionnaire answered that 'Yes' gifts/promotions do attract them to a magazine. I could use this and include something simple, for example I could use one of my contents on 'New artists' and include free downloads as it will work as advertisement to the artist and also attract a reader to buy it as they are getting something free. I have a good knowledge that free music would be popular as 17/30 people chose that if they could get a gift or promotion they would want free music.
In terms of contents I will choose a range, the most popular was upcoming artists so this could be a main feature. However, I want to relate the double page spread closely with the front cover therefore will use the second most popular feature of a front cover of celebrity interviews as by being a celebrity they will attract to both men and women therefore I can use an image of a woman on the front cover, mostly likely of a well known woman in rock.

Product Placement
Magazine are sold in a large range of places. For example, newsagents, supermarkets, petrol and petrol stations. This is because there are many different genres of magazine therefore they must target different markets and these different markets will shop in different places. The sales of magazines are ongoing as many magazines have loyal customers. In 2008 around 643,424 music magazines were sold however in 2009 around 582,697 music magazines were sold. This is a decrease, I imagine this is because the information you can get in magazines is available in other places for free and is alot more easily accessed through things such as the internet. It could also be because music taste has moved to more mainstream music and no magazines really fulfill the genre however websites online and the television do.
When I sent my questionnaire out the results showed that there was an equal amount of people from each gender that read music magazines. There was also the majority of people in the age range of 17-21. The majority being 17 because I posted my questionnaire in an environment that is dominated by 17 year olds. I must consider this and find out where 17 year olds go and have access to, to purcahse magazines. I can assume that these will be places that are either in walking distance or a place they can get to with the use of public transport as this how teenagers mainly get places as at this age they will have only just if they have even started learning to drive.
Although many of my participants results showed that their favourite genre of music was R&B and that they didn't read music magazines because there was not a magazine no fit their genre, I think I am going to use a rock magazine. As this market is specific therefore the market are very easy to target to as they are easy to research. Also it has alot of competition therefore the magazine could use this to their advantage in terms of getting exclusive information before the existing magazine and also using better pricing. The rock magazines at supermarkets, I have notcied are all grouped together and all use black as their main colour. I am going to work on this and choose a brighter colour this will allow the magazine to stand out from the competition this is important as I would like my magazine to stand out to a reader and bring in new readers.

Real media artefact 3 - Kerrang contents page
The contents page of Kerrang, issue 1348 does not follow the house style that the front cover sets. The front cover uses blue and black. However the contents uses yellow and black. These two colours together have connotations of danger or warnings. This will attract the reader as it portrays an intriguing image. The house style, however, does seem to be more primary colours and black rather than one particular colour. I think this is to create a contrast. However the idea of using plain bold fonts is continued for the main information and the destroyed font for main headings is shown in the contents aswell as the front cover. Again this could be to cause a connotation with this look and the magazine to remind the reader when they see this font effect.Kerrang's contents page in this issue has quite a simple layout. It has a heading 'CONTENTS' in the top left hand corner and a main image of the band 'Escape the fate' at the top and what page number this is on. The image is very much forgrounded on the page, this could be because they are not mentioned on the front cover. I think Kerrang do this because the audience will see that they were not mentioned on the front cover and then it'll be an unexpected content and they may wonder what other unexpected contents are throughout the magazine and then buy it to find out.
It then states 'Kerrang this week' and then the features the magazine has. This will allow the reader to believe that the magazine has new content every week therefore again, acting as an incentive to buy it again to find out what is in Kerrang the next week. Most of the contents list is in chronological order however there are a few contents that are foregrounded in some way, these will be the main features of the magazine and what Kerrang will feel appeal to the audience the most to make them buy it. It also has an editors letter in the bottom left corner. This will most likely be a house style that the magazine always use.
From looking at previous issues of Kerrang I have noticed that the range of contents is very similar in the way in which it has contents specific to this issue and then has areas of contents that is the same in every issue. For example, 'News' 'Live reviews' and 'Feedback.' They are also presented with the same house style in each issue of black boxes with yellow distressed font style writing. This repetition will be for the regular purchasers of Kerrang
Real media artefact 3 - Kerrang front cover
Kerrang is a rock magazine that is released weekly it's first issue was 7 June 1981. The name of the magazine 'Kerrang' is an onomatopeia, as it creates the same sound that an electric guitar makes when it is strummed. Readers of the magazine will appreciate this as they will listen to rock music where electric guitars are played alot and are a dominating instrument. This sound is almost represented through the font of the text aswell as it is cracked and shattered in black bold writing. The shattered effect of the text would remind the audience of how glass is shattered when a loud noise, such as an electric guitar on an amp, is played. The layout of the magazine front cover is quite busy and cluttered. This could portray the idea of rock artists being quite messy and not orderly in what they do. It has captions across the very top of the cover and then a pug in the centre of the page saying '150 Killer tracks as voted by you.' The '150'also has a cracked effect and almost looks burnt and reminds us of the anarchic attitude rock stars are portrayed to have. Also by using the term 'Killer tracks' rock stars do have connotations of viloence.
The main image of well known artists is wrapped around this pug. The use of different well known artists shows how the magazine is established and focuses on big artists rather than less known up and coming artists. This could increase the market as they can target people that aren't just interested in rock as people will know these well known artists because other types of media coverage.
The main colour of the magazine front cover is blue on black. From looking at other Kerrang front covers it seems that they do not follow a specific colour, but the scheme of colours do seem to mostly be primary colours. This could be because it is reader friendly as they are colours that would attract both male and female and of a range of ages as they have friendly connotations.
All of the cover lines on the front of the magazine are just names of artists this shows how Kerrang have confidence that they have selected all the artists needed to attract an audience without having to advertise the actual article. This could be due to market research in which the market are just happy to have content on those artists. However they do mention at the top 'Exclusive interviews inside' this could be to help attract new customers of the magazine.
Real media artefact 2 - Q double page spread
This double page spread from issue number 296 of Kerrang focus' on the main feature of the front cover of Liam Gallagher from Oasis. It is the second double page of the interview. The top left hand corner states 'Beady Eye' which is a caption taken from the front cover 'Liam's beady eye kick off.'The image is based at the top of the page and spreads across both pages. It is of Liam Gallagher and 3 of his band mates from his new band, Andy Bell, Gem Archer and Chris Sharrock. These 3 artists are artists that were also in the band 'Oasis' with him. The image has an antique look about it with very dull, neutral colours. I think this is to add a sense of 'preppy-ness' to the image and could portray an image of 'old school.' This is a very current look, therefore will attract readers that are younger. The image has Liam sat further forward on his own chair, whereas the rest of the band members are sat all on one sofa together and are less prominant in the picture. This creates a sense of dominance from Liam, which is reminds us of how he is the only band member shown on the front cover. This could lead to the reader assuming the interview is most probably mainly about him and focuses on him and his percpective and opinion. All 4 of the band members have very serious, stern looks on their faces. The reader could interpret from this that they mean 'business' and the reader would wonder as to why they look so serious and therefore read on to find out what the image is showing.
There is the caption in a white text box quoting ''What eye once was'' and then ''Liam's bandmates and their pre-Oasis pasts.' The first part is a play on words with the use of 'eye' instead of 'I.' They have done this because the new name of their band is 'Beady eye.' And this will remind the reader of this, allowing them to remeber the band name, this will help promote the new formed band. The use of mentioning 'pre-Oasis past' also draws the reader in as they will probably be most familiar with these artists because of Oasis therefore, by talking about before then it shows it is an attempt to foreground the artists as individuals rather than the well known band they were previously in.
The text just uses one drop cap in the first column of the double page spread. It uses 'P' for the word 'Paris.' The word is a plosive sound therefore is strong and will catch the readers attention with the phonetics of the letter.
The text is split up in 6 columns as the text is wrapped underneath the image and each line is alligned to the left. This breaks up the text significantly and makes it more attractive to look at and also more welcoming to read as by splitting it up into smaller parts it looks like less text. It is also split into question and answer. The question is in a bolder font and then the initials of the artist that is answering the question. This will allow the reader to scan read and find with ease what questions they are interested in reading the answer to giving them the option to skip the questions answer if they are not interested in the question. Also, if they have a particular band member they prefer they will be able to scan for their initials and pick out questions they have answered. This again breaks up the text, the reader will remember this and also remember how the magazine was, because of this, therefore easier to read and find information they are interested in.
The language used in the interview shows dominance from both questioner and answerer. For example, at one point Q say 'Give me an impression of the atmosphere in Oasis in the first six months of 2009.' This is an imperative sentance ordering the band members to 'give an impression' rather than them asking to. This will have been to get the answer they need rather than leaving an open question to which the band member may not answer sucsinctly enough. However there is a time when Liam Gallagher answers a question 'Without a doubt' this is a closed answer without much elaboration. Q also address Liam by his name showing that their is a casual relationship. This almost brings the barriers down for the reader as they will feel relaxed by the atmosphere the interview is giving and allowing themselves to be interested in the interview.
The house style is continued through to the double page spread. It uses the colours red and black with a very neutral almost off white background. This familiarises the style with the reader by constantly using the same look. This allows the reader to remember this look and when seeing something red be reminded of the magazine. It also uses red text boxes to foreground background information from each bandmember, this is very similar to the use of a red text box on the front cover to foreground the magazine name 'Q.' The use of red text boxes on this page will remind the reader of this feature on the front cover, therefore reminding them of the name of the magazine. It also, alike the front cover, uses very simple fonts such as times new roman and what looks like arial. This reminds us of the continuous simplistic sophisticated style of the magazine, making it very attractive to the reader with an ease about it.
Real media artefact 2 - Q contents page
The contents of Q magazine is set over two pages. It states in black and white writing in the top left corner 'Q Contents' and then on the top right 'Issue 296.' The use of 'Q' at the top allows the reader to be reminded of the brand name, to help Q get brand loyalty from consumers. It also titles the page 'Contents' so the reader knows immediately that they will find what is in the magazine on this page and it is clear to them. The actual contents is on each of the sides of the contents page. On the left there is the 'Features' list, this will draw in the attention of new readers. This is the contents of the magazine that is exclusive to this issue. On the right hand side is the 'Regulars' this will appeal to existing readers with brand loyalty as they will trust that magazine will include this in every issue. Each bit of content is stated individually with the heading of the article at the top of each section in black bold writing underlines with a red line. To the right of each heading it has the page number. This means the reader can find what they are looking straight away, this will make the magazine an easy read, this will be an incentive for the reader to buy the magazine again. Between each list of contents there is images that are related to the features stated on the front of the magazine. For example, there is another image of Liam Gallagher, from Oasis on the left hand side taking up the rest of this page. It states at the bottom of this images '46.' This is so the reader is aware of what page the main feature is on as this could be a main reason for many of the customers to have bought it, as it is the artist that is featured on the front cover. On the right page of the contents there are images of Adele and Noah and The Whale, two artists again that are featured on the front cover. This is important as one of the main reasons a customer will pick up a magazine is because of the features stated on the front cover. Therefore, they will expect to see these and be reminded of these throughout the magazine. The use of simplistic design is used again in the contents page. Using the house style colours of red, black and white again. These colours are contempary and also neutral so will attract to young adults and older adults, both female and male.
There is a large range of contents both individual features and regular features. Some of the individual features are Queen and Oasis' interviews. These are both incredibely well known, mainstream bands, therefore even people that aren't very interested in music at a deep level will be interested in it because they will be aware of the bands through general media, and even gossip magazines for Oasis as there is alot of controversy about the band. There is also the regular contents of 'Access all areas.' This will attract readers as they will feel as though they are getting exclusive news that is not available to everybody. It also, has the content 'Cash for questions' again this will attract readers as it is an incentive to read the magazine as there is the prospect of 'free money' for taking part in a feature.
There is a range of different language types used. For example, very informal language like "minus you-know-who." This creates a casual relationship between the writer and reader and also make is easier to read because of the informality of the text. It also uses jargon that is relevant to music. For example 'electro-pop' that is a genre of music. It is able to do this as it is clear that the reader will have a knowledge of what this is, as it is related to music and the reader of this magazine will be interested in music, as it is a music magazine. There is also the language use of external references. For example in the 'Last Requests' section of the contents page it states how within the magazine there is 'Sam Riley doing "the Ian Curtis dance." Here Q assume that the readers know who this person is and the dance they are talking about.

Real media artefact 2 - Q front cover
Q is a music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom since October 1986. The Name 'Q' is a play on words for 'Cue the music.' This will attract the audience as by using just one letter it portrays a power that they can sell their magazine with just one letter. Also because it is just one letter the audience will remember it easily and as Q is a letter you will come across in day to day situations you will be reminded of the magazine alot of the time. The tagline of the magazine is 'Discover great music.' This allows the audience to feel safety in that when they buy the magazine it will focus on 'great' music therefore they will not be wasting their money buying it. Also, great is not a hyperbole which is what some magazines may use to try and sell themselves. This can sometimes backfire as it becomes unbelievable, however by just using the word 'great' Q will attract readers that will trust the brand. Also, by using the verb discover, it allows a sense of adventure for the reader as they feel they will go to read the magazine and come across/discover things they have never done before. This will result in them wanting to read on and see what they could find out.
The layout of the front cover is very simplistic with captions down either side and just one main image. This portrays a sense of sophistication and therefore would most probably attract an older audience. The main imagine in the middle is of Liam Gallagher, a member of the mainstream band Oasis. The image is a close up of his head with just the top of his shoulders showing. He is wearing sunglasses which creates a sense of mystery because we cannot see his eyes. By not seeing someones eyes you cannot tell their emotion, again this could make the reader wonder what his emotion is, making them want to read on. Also, the rest of the band you can see in the reflection in his sunglasses, this shows that he has a sense of dominance that they are not on the same level as him as they to, do not have a close up. The reader will wonder why this is, and why it is being portrayed so strongly in the front cover. Also, Liam is wearing a camoflauge jacket, this has connotations of war. The magazine will assume that because Oasis are so mainstream and so well known the reader will be able to relate this immediately with the conflict and almost war like situations that go on between the two brothers in the band. The close up of Liam is the only image on the front cover, this could portray to a reader that Q are so confident in their main story that they do not need to show any others as much through images, again creating trust between the writer and reader.
The main colours of the front cover are red/gold/black and white. These are all colours with rich/wealthy connotations. They show class, and alike the layout sophistication, resulting in the magazine attracting the target audience they wish to attract. The colours are continuously used throughout the magazine, this would allow the reader to build an assosiation between the colours and the magazine. So if they see the colours around it may remind them of the magazine, and the remind them to buy it.
The captions are wrapped around the main image in the centre. They include 'ELBOW NEW ALBUM EXCLUSIVE.' The 'ELBOW' is in black bold writing so it is clear to the reader the artist Elbow will be featuring in this magazine. The the next like quotes 'NEW ALBUM EXCLUSIVE' this is written the same font but in gold colouring. This helps point out the fact that it is exclusive as gold represents something that is the best and therefore not available much (exclusive) to the audience. It again has 'Noah and the whale' in black bold writing, again another band that will be featuring in the magazine being advertised to the audince by using large simple writing.
The language used in the cover lines are again, types that would attract to an older audience for example 'tit' and 'booze, fags.' These are all words that only an older audience would use as tit could have sexual connotations, and is an unpleasent term for a person that only older people would understand. And booze and fags are two things that are only available to people over 18, therefore the magazine will attract people of this age group as it mentions things that will be relevant in their lives.
The front cover also uses pugs, for example a circle in the top right hand corner that holds the information 'Queen 16 page exclusive May & Taylor speak! The unseen Freddie' This, is to catch the readers attention that they are getting even more interesting content in their magazine along with the main story of Liam Gallagher from Oasis. The 'Queen' is in the biggest font therefore will successfully attract the reader, as they will aswell recognise the word queen and associate it with the band as they are historic and very well known.
